The Cambridge Modern History is a comprehensive modern history of the world, beginning with the 15th century age of Discovery, published by the Cambridge University Press in the United Kingdom and also in the United States.
The first series, planned by Lord Acton and edited by him with Stanley Leathes, Sir Adolphus William Ward and G. W. Prothero, was launched in 1902 and totalled fourteen volumes, the last of them being an historical atlas which appeared in 1912. The period covered was from 1450 to 1910.
A second series, The New Cambridge Modern History, now covering the years 1450 to 1945, appeared in fourteen volumes between 1957 and 1979, again concluding with an atlas.
The original Cambridge Modern History was planned by Lord Acton, who during 1899 and 1900 gave much of his time to coordinating the project, intended to be a monument of objective, detailed, and collaborative scholarship. Acton was Regius professor of modern history at Cambridge, and a fellow of All Souls, Oxford. He had previously established the English Historical Review in 1886 and had an exalted reputation.
The new work was published in fourteen volumes between 1902 and 1912, in the British Isles by the Cambridge University Press and in the USA by Macmillan & Co. of New York. Written mostly by English scholars, the first twelve volumes dealt with the history of the world from 1450 up to 1910. The final volume, numbered 12, was The Latest Age and appeared in 1910. There then followed two supplemental volumes.
The history was later followed by similar multi-volume works for the earlier ages, namely the Cambridge Ancient History and the Cambridge Medieval History. As the first of such histories, it later came to be seen as establishing a tradition of collaborative scholarship.

This is a very good reproduction of a late 19th, early 20th century British classic scholarly work. There do not appear to be any errors or weird characters in the work's transmutation from the print version. This alone is worth the price.Product details

Cambridge Modern History volumes 15 eBook Adolphus William Ward Paul Dalen Reviews
I just bought this book based on the reviews so far. I find that when I click on the link for any chapter in the tble of contents, I am led to the book cover. No way to go directly to any volume or chapter within any volume. Since this is a 4000+ page work, the only option of reading it sequentially is not appealing. Don't buy it unless this problem is corrected.
I am from an ex-communist country. I learned at school histrory in accordance with marxism-leninism. The true story I uncover only today. Thanks!
This book is okay; like most surveys it lacks the narrative that I feel is so important for students. It is, however, a great resource for personal education in the period.
old edition, vast, will take a life-time to read , great on renaissance, some bias obviously, very erudite, and no need to hesitate if you are interested in history
The Cambridge Modern History is a great buy. For very little money the reader will get an enormous amount of wonderful, and detailed, historic information. I have been an avid reader of history all my life and within these volumes I have discovered numerous factoids that I did not know. The problem is the information does come at a price, and that is difficult reading. Some of the chapters move along well but the vast majority of them are very slow going. Some of it is the age of the writing. People did not communicate in books in the early 1900s the way we do now. The writing is much more formal, long sentences with lots of commas and intermix thoughts, mostly inserted to moderate the main thought. To a modern reader this can be somewhat off putting. Modern writing mostly stresses getting on with it, even in academic circles "We are not, after all, writing a long philosophic treatise" vs "we are not writing philosophy".
One other problem is the dated nature of the material. New research has called some of the information into question.
Nonetheless, well worth the money.

Similar to the Cambridge Medieval History Volumes 1 to 5 this textbook of modern history is a gem for the history student. Hard reading for the reader of history events that seek more accounts of events than scenario studies.
