I got Dead: The ugly beginning for free through Amazon and got hooked immediately. Then I saw this box set and figured hell I will get it since it has some extra back stories that were not in the original.I was disappointed though when I opened it and saw that the layout was not how it was in the first book. In the original book you went from the story about Steve Hobart to a vignette to the story of the Geeks and so on. That was good because you had some characters that crossed over from said vignettes to the main story and everything made sense.
But when I got the box set everything was broken up. You have all the Steve chapters, then all the vignette's and then all the Geek chapters so nothing makes sense when meeting new characters that cross over.
Anyway that is about the only main complaint other then a few typo's (very few) I love the series and I am glad that the second box set went back to the previous format.

I can only say that the first 50% of the book is excellent. After that point, my copy has *major* formatting flaws - as in, half of each paragraph is missing, making the rest of the book unreadable. Three stars only until fixes the problem so the rest of the book can be read.
I really enjoyed this but I couldn't help but wonder how much TWD influenced the author. I know that most zombie stories follow along similar lines but it was close in some areas. Examples Someone made a machine to mimic cries to attract the zombies, someone else used the same type of sword used in TWD etc etc. That being said, this is a great book and I will be reading more from this author.
I enjoy the various groups that have formed and each one's trials. I have to reorient myself when the story jumps to a different group but find i fall right back into each situation easily. It is my second time reading this series.
For some reason I have been on a Zombie reading craze...was looking at the various "series" and saw this. I like the idea of a Special Edition Compendium, I collect comics as well so was familiar with the concept. I read through this quickly over several days. A fun fast ride that keeps you engaged and turning the pages. Mr. Brown has added something to genre that works on all levels. Funny as soon as I finished this I had to buy Dead Winter as well...now I can't wait until December to see what happens next.
What a great read for Zombie fans! It's written so well. I got very invested in the characters. The zombies are just an obstacle they have to cross. If you're a fan of the Walking Dead then you will love these books. The author gets you inside the characters to understand what people would and would not do when there are no rules, no justice system, whether that's good or bad in a way that I don't think the Walking Dead does. The 2nd book is dark! Think The Governor from the compendium (not the show) and then have about a half dozen of those characters. There are of course the good guys) He really takes you inside the the reactions and actions of the medical/research field, military, criminals, ordinary citizens, members of hate organizations, you name it. It's a comprehensive look at all the factions of our society.
I cannot say enough good things about the Dead series. The series is so good that it has me writing my first review. It has believable, consistent characters that mostly act rationally considering the position they find themselves in. The characterization is what mostly sold me on this series and made it a favorite. Mr. Brown will make you laugh and cry but does not lean heavily on the melodrama like some other series in this genre. He shows you the ugly underbelly of how things would realistically play out with an event on this scale and it will make you uncomfortable at times.
Save yourself some time and if you like the first three books, just go ahead and order the rest of this series and the Zomblog series as well. You will not be disappointed.
After reading a great many dismal Zombie books, TW BROWN'S "DeadSpecial Edition Compendium" has me wanting more of THIS author's writing! Thank you for fleshing out the characters, having full story lines, and while I will still need to purchase the rest if the books, I don't feel cheated, in the least.
WELL worth picking this book up ... and you won't have to buy the first DEAD book, as it's all included in this one. Other books may be, as well, which you may wish to ask the author, so as not to become frustrated re-buying...
